Risk-to-Reward Ratio in Forex: R Multiples, Win Rate and Expectancy
INTRODUCTION Risk-to-reward ratio (R:R) compares the potential planned loss of a trade with its potential planned gain. It helps express whether a target offers sufficient space relative to the invalidation point. But ratio alone does not show probability, costs or profitability. 1. HOW TO CALCULATE IT For a long trade entered at 1.2000 with Stop Loss 1.1970 and Take Profit 1.2060, risk equals 30 pips and planned reward equals 60 pips. Written as risk:reward, the ratio is 1:2. A 45-pip target for the same 30-pip risk offers 1:1.5. 2. WHAT 'R' MEANS One R is the amount planned to lose if the stop is hit. If you risk $10, a result of +2R is approximately +$20 before trading costs, and -1R about -$10. Recording results in R makes positions of different monetary sizes easier to compare. 3. WIN RATE AND BREAKEVEN Ignoring costs, a strategy that earns +2R on wins and loses -1R on losses breaks even at a win rate of about 33.3%. With 1:1, the breakeven rate is 50%. Trading costs make the required win rate somewhat higher. 4. EXPECTANCY MATTERS Expected R per trade = (win probability × average win in R) − (loss probability × average loss in R) − costs. For example, 45% wins at 1.5R and 55% losses at 1R yield +0.125R gross expectancy. Small samples can be misleading, and real slippage changes the result. 5. MARKET STRUCTURE BEFORE TARGET Do not force a 1:3 target if major resistance sits directly ahead. The target must be plausible given actual structure and volatility. Likewise a large theoretical reward is not useful if the stop is tucked inside ordinary market noise. 6. PARTIAL EXITS AND BREAKEVEN Taking half off at +1R and the remainder at +2R yields +1.5R in total if both portions exit as planned. Moving the remainder to breakeven changes the distribution. Journal actual rather than advertised R multiples. 7. COMMON ERRORS Confusing reward:risk with risk:reward wording, assuming 1:3 always beats 1:1, overlooking commissions and choosing a stop only to manufacture an impressive ratio. FAQ Is 1:2 mandatory? No; optimal targets depend on validated strategy and market context. Can 70% win rate lose money? Yes, when average losses are much larger than wins. CALCULATING RISK TO REWARD For a long trade at EUR/USD 1.2000, SL 1.1970 and TP 1.2060, planned risk is 30 pips and reward is 60 pips. The risk:reward ratio is 1:2. For a Sell, the arithmetic is reversed: stop is above entry and target below. Spread, commission and slippage reduce net returns. WHAT IS AN R-MULTIPLE? One R equals the initial planned risk on a trade. If that risk is $10, a +2R winner yields about $20 gross while -1R means about $10 planned loss. Tracking results in R lets traders compare performance across different balances and lot sizes without confusing large positions with good decisions. BREAKEVEN WIN RATE Ignoring transaction costs, 1:1 average win/loss needs 50% wins to break even; 1:2 needs approximately 33.3%; 1:3 needs 25%. But strategies with wider targets may hit targets less often. Higher reward multiple alone does not mean better actual expectancy. EXPECTANCY EXAMPLE Suppose a system wins 45% of trades at an average +1.5R and loses 55% at -1R. Gross expectancy is 0.45×1.5 – 0.55×1 = +0.125R per trade before costs. If execution costs total 0.15R on average, net expectancy becomes negative. Therefore backtest fees and actual fills. REALISTIC TARGETS If H1 supply sits just 15 pips above a 30-pip-risk Buy, claiming a 1:3 target beyond supply is questionable. Identify the likely barriers to price before deciding whether the trade has an acceptable reward profile. PARTIAL EXITS CHANGE RR If half the position closes at +1R and half at +2R, total gain is +1.5R when both are reached. If the second half stops out at breakeven, the overall result differs. Journal fractional exits, fees and maximum favorable/adverse movement. FAQ Does 1:2 always beat 1:1? No. Does 70% win rate guarantee profit? No, average losses may dominate. Does RR measure risk probability? No, it only compares planned price distances. RISK:REWARD IS A PRICE-DISTANCE COMPARISON A Risk-to-Reward Ratio compares planned monetary downside with planned upside. A 1:2 trade risks one unit for a target of two units. It does not predict how frequently the target will be hit. A trader could mark any distant target on a chart; only a tested system and market structure can determine whether that target is plausible. Transaction costs reduce realized reward and may increase effective risk. BUY AND SELL EXAMPLES Buy EUR/USD at 1.1000, Stop Loss 1.0980 and Take Profit 1.1040: risk 20 pips and target 40 pips, a planned 1:2 before costs. Sell GBP/USD at 1.2750, SL 1.2780 and TP 1.2690: risk 30 pips and target 60 pips, also 1:2. These identical ratios can carry different money risks because the instrument's pip value and lot size differ. R MULTIPLE IS A UNIT OF INITIAL RISK If initial planned loss is $12, that amount is 1R. A realized +$24 gain is +2R before trading costs, and -$12 is -1R. Tracking R makes strategies easier to compare when account balances and position volumes change. But do not quietly redefine 1R after a trade has already moved; the initial risk reference should remain documented for honest performance analysis. BREAK-EVEN WIN RATE FORMULA Ignoring costs, a system that wins W units per win and loses L units per loss breaks even when win probability × W equals loss probability × L. At +2R average wins and -1R average losses, the breakeven win rate is 1/(2+1) ≈ 33.3%. At +1.5R versus -1R it is 1/(1.5+1)=40%. At +3R versus -1R it is 25%. Trading costs increase the required success rate. A STRATEGY WITH HIGH WIN RATE THAT LOSES Suppose 80% of positions win +0.3R but 20% lose -1.5R. Gross expectancy is 0.8×0.3 − 0.2×1.5 = -0.06R. Many green trades can disguise a losing strategy. A high win rate is not a substitute for a realistic payoff distribution. Compare average result in R and maximum drawdown, not just how frequently the broker terminal shows a profit. A STRATEGY WITH LOWER WIN RATE THAT WINS GROSS Suppose 42% win +2R and 58% lose -1R. Gross expectancy is 0.42×2 − 0.58×1 = +0.26R per trade. If average trading costs, slippage and other effects reduce outcome by 0.1R per trade, the simplified net estimate becomes +0.16R. In practice, costs may depend on trade duration and outcome, so measure actual realized trades rather than assuming a constant fee. RISK-REWARD AND MARKET STRUCTURE A potential Buy from H1 Demand may encounter previous H1 Supply before its distant +3R objective. If that Supply is a meaningful obstacle, a trader cannot merely ignore it because 1:3 looks attractive. A tested strategy may use partial exits or a nearer target, but changes should be applied consistently. The best ratio depends on the conditional setup, not a universal number. HOW STOP SIZE AFFECTS THE RATIO Moving a Stop Loss closer may improve the printed R:R without improving the trade's chance of success. If the original structural invalidation is 40 pips away, pretending risk is 10 pips may place the stop within normal fluctuations. The strategy then changes. A better process is to maintain structural invalidation and reduce position volume to respect monetary risk. PARTIAL TAKE PROFIT MATHEMATICS Suppose 25% of volume closes at +1R, 25% at +2R and 50% at +3R. If every target executes, total gross R is 0.25×1 + 0.25×2 + 0.50×3 = +2.25R. If the last half instead closes at breakeven, actual realized R is lower. Tracking individual target hits without weighting the volume can exaggerate strategy outcomes. BREAKEVEN MANAGEMENT CHANGES EXPECTANCY Moving Stop Loss to Entry at +1R might protect some capital after favorable movement but can turn would-be winners into near-zero trades if the market retests the entry zone. The net cost of a nominal Breakeven exit may remain negative after commissions. Compare a backtest with and without the breakeven rule instead of assuming it must improve profitability. WHY AVERAGES NEED A MEANINGFUL SAMPLE Ten trades can create a misleading win rate or expectancy. A strategy may behave differently during NFP weeks, quiet Asian sessions, strong trends and prolonged ranges. Assess enough observations across regimes, record confidence in your estimates and avoid treating backtest profitability as a promise. Drawdowns and losing streaks are part of the distribution, not anomalies to ignore. A PRACTICAL STRATEGY REVIEW SHEET Record total valid setups, actual traded setups, winners, losers, average winner in R, average loser in R, fees, expectancy, maximum drawdown and rule violations. Keep the plan's target method fixed during the review period. If you change from fixed 1:2 exits to multiple partial targets, treat the new rules as a different tested strategy rather than mixing the results without explanation. FAQ Is 1:2 always better than 1:1? No. Can a 30% win rate be profitable? It can under sufficient average payoff, after costs. Does the RR number include probability? No. Does a +3R screenshot mean the full position earned +3R? Not if earlier partial exits reduced volume. Should every setup be forced into a 1:3 target? No. CONCLUSION Evaluate ratio alongside setup quality, win probability, transaction costs and realistic execution. PIPSEPAISA FREE COURSES Sir Sajid Khan Ghori — Free Forex Technical Analysis Course. INTRODUCTION Risk-to-Reward (RR) planned loss aur target profit ka comparison hota hai. 1:2 ka matlab agar planned loss 1 unit hai to target 2 units. RR akela profitability guarantee nahi karta. 1. EXAMPLE Buy 1.2000, SL 1.1970, TP 1.2060 ho to risk 30 pips aur target 60 pips hai, yani 1:2. Agar target 45 pips ho to 1:1.5. 2. R MULTIPLE Agar per-trade risk $10 hai to +2R approximately $20 gross profit aur -1R $10 planned loss hoga. R multiples different account sizes ke trades compare karne mein useful hain. 3. WIN RATE Costs ignore kar ke 1:2 model ko break even hone ke liye roughly 33.3% win rate chahiye. 1:1 model mein 50%. Costs include karne se required win rate barhta hai. 4. EXPECTANCY Formula: Win Probability × Average Win minus Loss Probability × Average Loss minus costs. 45% wins at +1.5R aur 55% losses at -1R ka gross expectancy +0.125R hai. Chhote sample par trust na karein. 5. STRUCTURE Sirf 1:3 target likhna kafi nahi. Agar next resistance qareeb ho to realistic target different ho sakta hai. SL ko structure se alag sirf RR acha dikhane ke liye tight na karein. 6. PARTIAL TP Half trade +1R aur half +2R par close ho to total +1.5R hota hai. Breakeven shift karne se actual outcome change ho sakta hai. COMMON MISTAKES Commissions ignore karna, 1:3 ko guaranteed best samajhna aur unrealistically tight SL. FAQ Kya 1:2 compulsory hai? Nahi. Kya high win rate ke bawajood loss ho sakta hai? Haan. RR KA CALCULATION EUR/USD Buy 1.2000, SL 1.1970 aur TP 1.2060 ho to Stop Loss 30 pips aur target 60 pips hai. Yani Risk:Reward 1:2. Sell trade mein SL Entry ke upar aur TP neeche hota hai. Spread aur fees ke baad net ratio thora different ho sakta hai. R MULTIPLE KYA HAI? 1R ka matlab initial planned risk. Agar $10 risk tha aur trade +2R close hui to gross $20 gain, -1R par planned $10 loss. R multiple se different balances aur Lot Sizes ke trades objectively compare kar sakte hain. BREAKEVEN WIN RATE Costs ignore kar ke 1:1 par 50% wins break-even, 1:2 par about 33.3%, aur 1:3 par 25% wins chahiye. Lekin bada target hit hone ki probability kam bhi ho sakti hai. High RR alone guaranteed profit nahi. EXPECTANCY EXAMPLE Suppose 45% trades +1.5R win karti hain aur 55% -1R lose. Gross Expectancy = 0.45×1.5 – 0.55×1 = +0.125R per trade. Agar average transaction costs 0.15R hon to net negative bhi ho sakta hai. Is liye fees/backtesting important hai. REALISTIC TP H1 Supply agar Buy Entry se sirf 15 pips upar ho aur SL 30 pips ho, to Supply ke beyond 1:3 TP bas paper par likhna sensible nahi. Price ka actual route aur barriers consider karein. PARTIAL PROFIT Half position +1R aur half +2R par close ho to total +1.5R banta hai, agar dono fills achieved hon. Second half Breakeven par close ho to overall result different hoga. Journal mein partial volumes record karein. FAQ 1:2 hamesha 1:1 se best? Nahi. 70% Win Rate profit guaranteed? Nahi. RR success probability batata hai? Nahi. RISK-TO-REWARD KYA MEASURE KARTA HAI? RR planned downside Loss aur potential upside Target ka ratio hai. 1:2 ka matlab ek unit planned risk ke badlay do units potential reward. Lekin is ratio se ye pata nahi chalta ke TP kitni probability se hit hogi. Chart par bohat door TP line laga kar 1:10 likhna easy hai, magar realistic market structure aur tested strategy ke bina woh target meaningful nahi. Spread, Slippage aur Commission actual realized ratio affect karte hain. BUY AUR SELL EXAMPLES EUR/USD Buy 1.1000, SL 1.0980 aur TP 1.1040: Risk 20 Pips, Reward 40 Pips = 1:2. GBP/USD Sell 1.2750, SL 1.2780 aur TP 1.2690: Risk 30 Pips, Target 60 Pips = 1:2. Dono RR same hain lekin Actual Dollar Risk same zaroori nahi, kyun ke Pair, Lot aur Pip Value different ho sakti hai. 1R AUR R-MULTIPLE Agar initial planned loss $12 hai to woh 1R hai. Trade +$24 gross close ho to +2R; -$12 planned loss ho to -1R. R-Multiple ki madad se different balances aur volume ke results compare kar sakte hain. Lekin trade open hone ke baad initial risk ko retrospectively change kar ke records improve na karein. Performance analysis ke liye original R reference documented rehna chahiye. BREAKEVEN WIN RATE FORMULA Costs ignore kar ke +2R average Win aur -1R average Loss wala system roughly 33.3% Win Rate par Breakeven ho sakta hai. +1.5R Wins aur -1R Losses ke liye 40% chahiye. +3R Winners aur -1R Losers par 25% theoretical Breakeven Rate hai. Lekin Actual Spread/Commission add karne se required Win Rate barh jati hai. High RR target hit kam frequently bhi ho sakti hai. 80% WIN RATE PHIR BHI LOSS Maan lein 80% trades +0.3R Win karti hain aur 20% trades -1.5R Loss. Gross Expectancy = 0.8×0.3 − 0.2×1.5 = -0.06R. Yani bohat green trades hone ke bawajood average trading system losing hai. Sirf Win Rate ko marketing headline na banayein. Average Win/Loss, Net Costs aur Maximum Drawdown equally important hain. LOWER WIN RATE PROFITABLE EXAMPLE Hypothetical strategy 42% wins +2R aur 58% losses -1R deti hai. Gross Expectancy 0.42×2 − 0.58×1 = +0.26R banti hai. Agar average costs approximately 0.1R reduce karein to simplified Net Expectancy +0.16R reh sakti hai. Reality mein Costs trade duration aur fills ke mutabiq different hoti hain, isliye actual results measure karein. MARKET STRUCTURE AUR TARGET H1 Demand par Buy setup mil jaye magar H1 Supply aapke planned +3R TP se pehle ho, to sirf impressive RR ki wajah se resistance ignore na karein. Nearby Supply meaningful reaction de sakti hai. Apna tested model fixed TP, partial exit ya structure-based target use karta ho to usi ke rules follow karein. Har setup ko force kar ke 1:3 na banayein. TIGHT STOP SE RR ARTIFICIALLY BETTER? Agar actual structural SL 40 Pips required hai aur trader sirf RR achhi dikhane ke liye 10 Pips stop use kare to printed 1:4 ho sakta hai, lekin trade normal price noise mein stop ho sakti hai. Is se underlying setup improve nahi hota. Pehle valid Invalidation, phir risk percent ke mutabiq smaller Lot choose karein. Stop ko trade ke structure se detached na karein. PARTIAL TP KA COMPLETE MATH Suppose 25% Volume +1R, 25% +2R aur 50% +3R par close hoti hai. Agar saare targets hit karein to weighted total = 0.25×1 + 0.25×2 + 0.50×3 = +2.25R, before costs. Agar last 50% Breakeven par close ho to total +2.25R nahi rahega. Sirf 'TP3 Hit' likh kar full volume ko +3R report karna accurate nahi jab partial exits pehle ho chuki hon. BREAKEVEN RULE EXPECTANCY BADALTA HAI +1R move ke baad SL Entry par shift karna kuch risk reduce kar sakta hai, lekin price normal retest kare to final target se pehle Breakeven close ho sakta hai. Commission ki wajah se Entry Price close par bhi Net small negative result ho sakta hai. Backtest Without BE aur With BE compare karein. Sirf emotion ki wajah se har trade par SL early move na karein. STRATEGY SAMPLE SIZE Sirf 10 trades ki Win Rate ya Expectancy long-term edge ka strong proof nahi. CPI/NFP weeks, Asian low volatility, London trend aur Range conditions different results de sakti hain. Larger honest sample collect karein aur Drawdown plus Losing Streaks monitor karein. Historical profitable results future guaranteed nahi. Journal mein every valid setup include karein. STRATEGY REVIEW WORKSHEET Total valid setups, Trades taken, Wins/Losses, Average Win R, Average Loss R, Commission, Spread/Slippage, Expectancy, Drawdown aur Rule Violations record karein. Agar fixed 1:2 exit se Partial TP approach par change kiya to dono strategies ka data separate compare karein. Different rules ko mix karna misleading result de sakta hai. FAQ 1:2 hamesha 1:1 se best? Nahi. 30% Win Rate profitable? Suitable payoff aur costs ke baad possible. RR success probability bata sakta hai? Nahi. TP3 Hit ka matlab full volume +3R? Partial close ho to nahi. Har setup 1:3 compulsory? Nahi. RISK REWARD KO CHART PAR TEST KAREIN Maan lein Buy Entry se Stop Loss 25 Pips neeche aur Previous Resistance 40 Pips upar hai. Paper par 1:3 TP 75 Pips upar mark ki ja sakti hai, lekin nearest meaningful Resistance 40 Pips par hai. Is ka matlab 1:3 target possible ho sakta hai, lekin us tak pohanchne ki probability aur structure ka assessment zaroori hai. Trader ko decide karna chahiye kya tested setup Resistance Breakout demand karta hai, partial exit karta hai, ya near target choose karta hai. R MULTIPLE JOURNAL MEIN IMPORTANT COLUMNS Initial Risk $ mein, Average Winner R, Average Loser R, Commission, Spread, partial closing aur Breakeven outcome ko record karein. Win Rate ke saath Net Expectancy calculate karein. Agar strategy ka historical average +0.05R hai magar average execution Costs 0.08R hain, to net performance negative ho sakti hai. Is liye sirf large RR headline dekh kar strategy ka faida conclude nahi karein. CONCLUSION RR ko Win Rate, expectancy, market structure aur actual costs ke saath evaluate karein.
