Margin and Free Margin in Forex: Equity, Margin Level and Stop-Out
PipSePaisa • Forex Education & Research
INTRODUCTION
Margin is collateral required to hold a leveraged position, not a purchase price or a direct measure of maximum loss. Understanding margin, equity and margin level helps traders avoid unintentionally running out of room when markets move against open positions.
1. KEY TERMS
Balance is cash after closed transactions. Equity usually equals balance plus floating profit or loss and applicable adjustments. Used margin is collateral assigned to open positions. Free margin commonly equals equity minus used margin. Broker terminology and calculations can vary.
2. MARGIN LEVEL
A common platform formula is margin level (%) = equity / used margin × 100, when used margin is positive. For example, $800 equity with $400 used margin gives 200%. At $500 equity and $400 used margin, the level falls to 125%.
3. MARGIN CALL VS STOP-OUT
A margin call is a warning or requirement tied to insufficient margin. Stop-out may automatically close positions when the broker's minimum level is breached. The exact thresholds, liquidation sequence and protections depend on broker and product rules.
4. WORKED POSITION EXAMPLE
Suppose the account begins with $1,000, opens positions using $250 margin and currently shows a $100 floating loss. Ignoring charges, equity is $900, free margin $650 and margin level 360%. A larger adverse price move decreases equity and free margin even if the position has not yet closed.
5. WHY LEVERAGE CAN CONFUSE
At higher leverage, opening a large position may require less margin, making available free margin look generous. But the market exposure remains large. Losses depend on the notional exposure and actual price movement, not just initial collateral.
6. RISK CHECKLIST
Check contract value, planned SL loss, aggregate exposure and existing floating P&L. Leave room for spreads and volatility. Do not open another trade just because the 'free margin' number is positive.
7. COMMON MISTAKES
Treating account balance as available equity, confusing used margin with acceptable risk and relying on broker liquidation instead of planning stops.
FAQ
Can free margin be negative? Depending on platform and market moves, yes. Is a margin call a guaranteed safety net? No.
MARGIN IS NOT A LOSS LIMIT
Margin is collateral required to maintain a leveraged position. It is not a trading fee and not a maximum loss guarantee. A platform may allow an order because margin is available even though the Stop Loss, if hit, would exceed the trader's intended monetary risk.
BALANCE, EQUITY, USED MARGIN, FREE MARGIN
Balance reflects closed account transactions. Equity usually includes floating profit or loss. Used Margin is collateral assigned to open positions. Free Margin generally equals Equity minus Used Margin. The exact calculations and credits differ by broker. Always monitor Equity, not merely Balance, when positions are open.
MARGIN LEVEL EXAMPLE
A typical Margin Level formula is Equity ÷ Used Margin × 100. If an account has $1,000 balance, $250 used margin and $100 floating loss, then Equity is approximately $900, Free Margin $650 and Margin Level 360%, ignoring additional adjustments. A further adverse market move reduces Equity and Free Margin.
MARGIN CALL AND STOP-OUT
Brokers define minimum margin requirements and the conditions for warning or automatic liquidation. They may close positions if Equity drops too far relative to required collateral. Stop-out execution is not necessarily instant at an exact amount and may not prevent a larger loss during gaps.
WHY HIGH LEVERAGE IS DECEPTIVE
Higher permitted leverage can reduce collateral needed to open the same notional exposure, which makes the Free Margin figure appear generous. But market losses on the position do not automatically become smaller. To assess risk, calculate Stop Loss distance times tick/pip value times volume.
MULTIPLE POSITIONS
Opening another trade because there is Free Margin can create concentrated risk. Existing Gold and USD-pair positions may respond together to a central-bank surprise. Calculate combined planned loss and leave operational buffer for normal spread changes.
FAQ
Can Equity be lower than Balance? Yes, with floating losses. Is positive Free Margin permission to risk more? No. Will broker Stop-Out save the entire deposit? No guarantee. What matters most? Exposure, planned loss and equity.
BALANCE IS NOT THE SAME AS TRADING EQUITY
Balance typically includes completed deposits, withdrawals and realized trade results. Equity incorporates floating gains and losses while trades remain open, subject to broker accounting. If an account displays $1,000 Balance but an open trade has -$180 unrealized P&L, the relevant Equity may be about $820, before other adjustments. A trader who only monitors Balance can miss a deteriorating risk situation.
USED MARGIN IS COLLATERAL
Used Margin refers to collateral tied to open exposure. It is not equivalent to a paid commission and it does not set the maximum possible loss. Depending on broker rules, offsetting or hedged positions may have special margin treatments. Contract size, symbol leverage and account type all affect required collateral. Read the broker's margin calculation for XAUUSD and other CFDs rather than assuming standard EUR/USD rules apply.
FREE MARGIN AND WHAT IT MEANS
Free Margin is commonly calculated as Equity less Used Margin. It represents capacity that may be available for additional positions or for absorbing some adverse movement. It is not cash that can be treated as money already earned. An account can have positive Free Margin while holding positions with an unacceptable potential stop-out loss. The ability to open a trade is not evidence that you should.
MARGIN LEVEL PERCENTAGE
A typical formula is Margin Level (%) = Equity ÷ Used Margin × 100 whenever Used Margin is greater than zero. Suppose Equity is $900 and Used Margin is $300; Margin Level is 300%. If the floating loss worsens and Equity drops to $450 while Used Margin stays $300, the level falls to 150%. Broker-specific warnings and automatic liquidation thresholds are separate from this arithmetic.
A COMPLETE ACCOUNT EXAMPLE
Start with $1,500 Balance. Open positions requiring $400 Used Margin. If floating P&L is -$200, then Equity is approximately $1,300 and Free Margin $900, ignoring other adjustments. Margin Level is about 325%. Another $300 adverse move in floating P&L would leave Equity near $1,000 and Free Margin $600. The platform may still permit further exposure, but that does not make it consistent with a conservative risk plan.
MARGIN CALL AND STOP-OUT DIFFER
A Margin Call can be a warning or collateral requirement when a threshold is reached. Stop-Out often refers to broker-driven liquidation when the account violates lower margin requirements. The levels and sequence vary across jurisdictions, account products and providers. In fast markets, fills may be poor or positions may close at unexpected prices. Treat these processes as last-resort account mechanics, not as primary Stop Loss placement.
WHY LEVERAGE MAKES FREE MARGIN MISLEADING
A broker offering a high leverage ratio may require relatively little margin for a large notional position. The Free Margin number can therefore look comfortable while the full price exposure remains substantial. If the market moves adversely, floating loss can destroy Equity rapidly. Always calculate pip-based or price-unit-based money risk independently from the collateral requirement.
MULTIPLE OPEN POSITIONS
Suppose a trader opens EUR/USD Buy, USD/CHF Sell and XAUUSD Buy. These positions may share sensitivity to US-dollar expectations. Even though each margin requirement appears manageable, simultaneous adverse movement can reduce Equity across all positions at once. Review both aggregate margin and the total monetary loss at stops under a correlated scenario.
HEDGING DOES NOT ELIMINATE COST
Opening opposite positions can alter net market exposure but may still involve two spreads, financing costs or complex broker margin treatment. A Buy and Sell on the same symbol is not guaranteed to produce a risk-free account. Pricing conventions, contract types and execution risk remain. Do not assume a hedge creates free profit or that the broker will always treat opposite tickets as fully offset.
HOW TO AVOID FORCED LIQUIDATION
Define the structural Stop Loss first, calculate proper lot size and maintain an operational margin buffer. Avoid layering extra trades solely because there is unused buying power. Watch upcoming CPI, NFP and FOMC events, where widening spreads and rapid P&L changes can erode margin. Review overnight financing and market-opening gap risk for multi-day positions.
COMMON INTERPRETATION ERRORS
A platform Balance of $2,000 with Equity $1,200 is not a fully intact $2,000 account when floating losses exist. A high Margin Level does not automatically imply that a trade has positive expectancy. Used Margin is not the same as risk-to-stop. A broker Stop-Out is not a guaranteed floor under realized losses.
FAQ
Can Free Margin fall while no trade is closed? Yes, floating losses reduce Equity. Can Margin Level fluctuate minute by minute? Yes. Are Margin Calls identical across brokers? No. Is high leverage a method to create more profit safely? No, it increases capacity for exposure. Should traders wait for Stop-Out to control losses? No.
CONCLUSION
Use equity and risk budgets to manage trades; margin metrics are an additional operational warning system.

INTRODUCTION
Margin leveraged position hold karne ke liye required collateral hai. Ye trade ka maximum loss nahi hota. Balance, Equity, Used Margin, Free Margin aur Margin Level alag concepts hain.
1. TERMS
Balance closed trades ke baad cash amount hai. Equity = balance + floating P/L (aur relevant adjustments). Used Margin open positions ke liye reserved hai. Free Margin aam tor par Equity minus Used Margin hai.
2. MARGIN LEVEL
Aksar formula hai Margin Level % = Equity ÷ Used Margin × 100. Agar Equity $800 aur Used Margin $400 ho to level 200% hai. Equity $500 reh jaye to level 125% banega.
3. MARGIN CALL AUR STOP-OUT
Margin Call warning ya extra margin requirement ho sakti hai. Stop-Out mein broker positions automatically close kar sakta hai. Exact percentage har broker mein different hoti hai.
4. PRACTICAL EXAMPLE
$1,000 balance, Used Margin $250 aur Floating Loss $100 ho, to Equity $900, Free Margin $650, Margin Level 360% hoga, fees ignore kar ke.
5. LEVERAGE CONFUSION
High leverage se required margin kam lag sakti hai, lekin exposure aur possible loss large rehte hain. Positive Free Margin ka matlab unlimited risk allowance nahi.
6. CHECKLIST
Lot, contract value, SL risk, floating losses aur correlated positions check karein. Spread aur volatility ke liye buffer rakhein.
COMMON MISTAKES
Balance aur Equity same samajhna, Used Margin ko Risk samajhna aur Stop-Out ka wait karna.
FAQ
Kya Free Margin negative ho sakti hai? Broker/platform aur market ke mutabiq possible hai.
MARGIN LOSS LIMIT NAHI
Margin leveraged trade ko hold karne ke liye collateral hota hai. Ye commission bhi nahi aur maximum monetary loss bhi nahi. MT5 mein margin available hone ka matlab ye nahi ke trade Risk Management ke rules follow karti hai.
BALANCE, EQUITY, USED, FREE MARGIN
Balance closed transactions ke baad amount hai. Equity mein floating Profit/Loss include hota hai. Used Margin open trades ka collateral hai. Free Margin generally Equity minus Used Margin hai. Jab trade open ho to sirf Balance nahi, Equity bhi monitor karein.
MARGIN LEVEL EXAMPLE
Typical formula Equity ÷ Used Margin × 100 hai. Account Balance $1,000, Used Margin $250 aur Floating Loss $100 ho to Equity roughly $900, Free Margin $650 aur Margin Level 360% hai, additional fees ignore kar ke. Agar market aur against move kare to Equity aur Free Margin decrease hongi.
MARGIN CALL AUR STOP-OUT
Har broker warning aur automatic liquidation ke thresholds set karta hai. Equity collateral requirement se bohat neeche ho to positions force-close ho sakti hain. Stop-Out exact amount par fill guarantee nahi karta, especially high volatility ya gap mein.
HIGH LEVERAGE KA CONFUSION
High leverage se same position ko hold karne ke liye margin kam ho sakti hai, jis se Free Margin zyada nazar aati hai. Lekin same Lot Size ka price movement se monetary loss kam nahi hota. Risk Stop Loss distance, Pip/Tick Value aur lot se calculate karein.
MULTIPLE POSITIONS
Sirf Free Margin positive hai is liye naya order mat lagayein. Gold aur USD trades Fed surprise par same time loss de sakti hain. Combined planned loss aur spread buffer consider karein.
FAQ
Equity Balance se kam ho sakti hai? Haan. Positive Free Margin = extra risk allowed? Nahi. Stop-Out deposit guarantee karta hai? Nahi. Main focus? Position exposure aur controlled loss.
BALANCE AUR EQUITY KA FARQ
Balance usually deposits, withdrawals aur Closed Trades ke realized outcomes show karta hai. Equity mein Open Trades ka Floating Profit/Loss bhi include hota hai, broker adjustments ke saath. Agar MT5 par Balance $1,000 hai lekin open positions -$180 Floating Loss mein hain to Equity around $820 ho sakti hai. Sirf Balance dekhna aur Equity ignore karna risk ka wrong picture de sakta hai.
USED MARGIN COLLATERAL HOTI HAI
Used Margin open leveraged exposure ko support karne ke liye reserved collateral hai. Ye Broker Commission nahi aur Maximum Trade Loss ka exact amount bhi nahi. Kuch Hedged ya opposite positions par Margin Treatment different ho sakti hai. Symbol ka Contract Size, Leverage aur Account Type important hote hain. Gold/XAUUSD ki Margin calculation ko EUR/USD ke standard assumptions se blindly replace na karein.
FREE MARGIN KYA BATA SAKTI HAI?
Free Margin aam tor par Equity minus Used Margin hoti hai. Ye operational capacity ka ek indicator hai jo extra positions ya adverse floating P/L absorb karne mein relevant hota hai. Lekin ye earned cash ya guaranteed safe amount nahi. Positive Free Margin ke bawajood current trades ka combined Stop Loss risk bohat large ho sakta hai. Order open karne ki ability aur order open karna sensible hona, do alag cheezein hain.
MARGIN LEVEL KA FORMULA
Common formula: Margin Level (%) = Equity ÷ Used Margin × 100. Maan lein Equity $900 aur Used Margin $300 hai, to level 300% banta hai. Agar floating loss badh jaye aur Equity $450 reh jaye, Used Margin $300 ho, to level 150% ho jayega. Actual Broker Margin Call aur Stop-Out thresholds is math se alag specific rules hote hain.
FULL ACCOUNT CALCULATION
Starting Balance $1,500. Open Positions ke liye Used Margin $400. Floating Loss -$200 ho to Equity approximately $1,300 aur Free Margin $900. Margin Level $1,300/$400 ×100 = 325% hai. Agar Floating Loss aur $300 increase ho to Equity near $1,000 aur Free Margin around $600 ho jayegi. Platform further trades allow kare to bhi risk budget violate karna sensible nahi.
MARGIN CALL VS STOP-OUT
Margin Call broker ki warning ya extra collateral requirement ho sakti hai jab threshold breach ho. Stop-Out mein broker lower margin threshold ke baad positions automatically liquidate kar sakta hai. Exact percentages aur closure sequence provider ke mutabiq different hoti hain. Fast market, News ya Gap mein poor execution ho sakti hai. Margin Call ko planned trading exit strategy ke barabar mat samjhein.
HIGH LEVERAGE FREE MARGIN KO MISLEADING BANA SAKTA HAI
High Leverage se large Notional Position relatively small Margin par open ho sakti hai. Is wajah se Free Margin achhi nazar aa sakti hai lekin Full Exposure bohat large rehti hai. Agar price against move kare to Floating Loss Equity ko rapidly reduce kar sakti hai. Pip Value aur actual price distance se Monetary Risk calculate karein; collateral se nahi.
MULTIPLE TRADES KA COMBINED IMPACT
Trader EUR/USD Buy, USD/CHF Sell aur XAUUSD Buy open karta hai. Ho sakta hai teeno positions kuch market regimes mein Dollar weakness par depend karti hon. Agar USD suddenly strong ho to simultaneous adverse movement Equity ko rapidly lower kar sakti hai. Har ticket ka Margin Requirement alag manageable lag sakta hai, lekin combined Stop Loss Risk aur Margin Impact ko saath monitor karein.
HEDGING FREE MONEY NAHI
Ek Symbol par Buy aur Sell dono open karne se market exposure partially offset ho sakti hai, lekin double Spread, Swap ya broker-specific Hedged Margin Rules apply ho sakte hain. Opposite positions ko guaranteed Risk-Free account samajhna galat hai. Execution, Contract Type aur Pricing Convention matter karte hain. Hedge strategy ko test kiye baghair 'Loss Lock' ya automatic profit method assume na karein.
STOP-OUT SE BACHNE KA PLAN
Structural SL define karein, Dollar Risk se Lot Size calculate karein aur adequate Free Margin Buffer rakhein. Sirf extra buying power available hai isliye multiple trades stack na karein. CPI, NFP, FOMC jaise major events par Spread Widening aur sudden Equity changes possible hain. Multi-day trades ke liye overnight Swap aur weekend gap risk bhi monitor karein.
COMMON MISUNDERSTANDINGS
Balance $2,000 aur Equity $1,200 hai to unrealized loss real risk picture mein important hai. High Margin Level ka matlab strategy profitable nahi. Used Margin ko Stop Loss Money Risk na samjhein. Broker automatic liquidation realized loss ka guaranteed cap nahi. Har number ka specific meaning hai.
FAQ
Bina position close kiye Free Margin kam? Haan, Floating Loss se. Margin Level minute by minute change? Haan. Har broker Margin Call same? Nahi. High Leverage safe profit method? Nahi. Loss control ke liye Stop-Out ka wait karna? Nahi, planned Risk Management use karein.
USED MARGIN AUR PLANNED RISK KA DIRECT COMPARISON
Maan lein kisi trade ki Used Margin $100 hai lekin actual Lot aur SL ke hisaab se planned Price Loss $60 hai. Doosri trade ki Used Margin $400 ho aur carefully sized SL risk $10 ho sakti hai, broker rules aur symbols par depend kar ke. Is se samajh aata hai ke Used Margin aur Stop Loss Amount alag calculations hain. High Leverage ki wajah se Low Margin dikh rahi ho, phir bhi exposure large ho sakti hai. Is liye MT5 mein Order open karte waqt 'Margin Required' ke saath 'Expected Loss at SL' ko separate calculate karein.
MARGIN MONITORING CHECKLIST
Open Positions ki Total Used Margin, Current Equity, Floating Loss, Free Margin, Margin Level aur combined Risk to Stops note karein. News ke waqt Spread Widening aur Slippage possible hai, is liye operational buffer rakhein. Agar aapka Trading Journal sirf Account Balance aur Win Rate show karta hai to important Margin Risk hidden reh sakta hai. Har position ka Contract Size aur Broker Stop-Out Policy samajhna zaroori hai.
CONCLUSION
Risk plan Equity aur position sizing se banayein; Margin Level ko warning metric samjhein.
